Japan Considers Legalizing Online Casinos - 27 Jul 2006 | | 27 Jul 2006
Millions of Asians visit online casinos every day and industry analysts have predicted time and time again that the Asian market will be the fastest growing segment in the world of online casinos in the next decade. In response, many Asian governments are taking steps to address the issue of internet gambling, although not all of them are going about it in the same way. While China is doing all it can to destroy any sign of online casinos within the country's borders, Japan is taking on a more sensible approach and started looking in the direction of legalizing gambling in the country.
The country's Liberal Democratic Party is leading a campaign to legalize land-based and online casinos by playing on the positive aspects of gambling. These include a boost for the Japanese economy in the form of taxation. Many western countries, including the United Kingdom, have taken the approach of legalizing online casinos by bringing them into the mainstream and Japan is seeking to adopt several ideas from these systems. The general idea is that if people are already gambling at online casinos, it might as well benefit the government.
Not everyone is thrilled about the idea of legalizing online casinos in Japan. Many religious and social groups have voiced their opposition to what they consider the negative impact of online casinos on Japanese society. It will be interesting to watch how the country deals with pressure from both sides of the spectrum.
